CHELSEA CONSIDERS OFFLOADING GARNACHO AFTER FAILED DEBUT SEASON AT STAMFORD BRIDGE
Alejandro Garnacho’s Chelsea tenure is in jeopardy. Read why the winger is facing an uncertain future following his poor form.
Nicky Butt didn’t hold back when he talked about Alejandro Garnacho. If they'd shared a dressing room at Manchester United, Butt said, Garnacho would've gotten a rude awakening, probably roughed up and told to get his act together.
Honestly, Garnacho has heard plenty of criticism about his attitude, both on and off the pitch. Fans see it all the time.
Butt knows the game’s changed a lot since his time, but he still thinks that if Garnacho were at Old Trafford back then, someone would've made sure he stopped messing around and focused on his football. Butt put it bluntly on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast: “Forget his ability; I don’t think he’s that great anyway, but his attitude was a disgrace at Man United. He would've gotten treated badly, taken out in training, if he were brought up with us.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, Garnacho’s idol, went through this same kind of tough love at United. As a teenager, it actually made him cry sometimes. Rio Ferdinand once admitted to “borderline bullying” him, and Quinton Fortune ribbed him constantly and pushed him hard, all to toughen him up. Ferdinand recalled on the Kyle and Jackie O radio show how he used to knock Ronaldo around every morning before training as a way to build resilience. Ronaldo, ever competitive, sometimes almost broke down, but it paid off.
Butt worked with Garnacho for a bit while he was at the club. He remembers Garnacho arriving at 16, thinking he belonged in the first team right away. Butt saw an attitude of too much confidence mixed with a bit of an edge. When Garnacho finally made it to the senior squad, Butt felt he got carried away too fast. “I hope young players get paid millions,” Butt said, “but after that bicycle kick, someone should’ve brought him back down to earth. Maybe nobody could. Selling him was the best thing United did.”
Chelsea bought Garnacho for £40 million last summer, hoping for success. So far, though, he just hasn’t managed to make much of a mark, and it’s been a frustrating debut season.
DRESSING ROOM TURMOIL: CHELSEA HIERARCHY FIRES LIAM ROSENIOR AS SENIOR PLAYERS REACT WITH FURY
Chelsea has sacked head coach Liam Rosenior following a 3-0 loss to Brighton. Calum McFarlane is appointed interim manager until May.
Chelsea has decided to part ways with Liam Rosenior and announced that Calum McFarlane will return as interim manager for the rest of the season.
This move comes less than a day after Chelsea suffered a 3-0 loss at Brighton on Tuesday night. That defeat marked a rough patch for Chelsea, as it’s the first time since 1912 they've lost five league matches in a row without scoring.
Currently, Chelsea sits seventh in the Premier League table, trailing fifth-placed Liverpool, the last spot for Champions League qualification, by seven points.
McFarlane previously stepped in after Enzo Maresca left in January, overseeing a 1-1 draw against Manchester City and a 2-1 loss to Fulham. He’s now set to lead the team in their FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley this Sunday.
Chelsea’s official statement released Wednesday afternoon said, "The Club has today parted ways with Head Coach Liam Rosenior. We thank Liam and his staff for their efforts during his time here. He has maintained professionalism and integrity since taking charge mid-season.
This was not a decision taken lightly, but recent performances and results have not met the required standards, especially with so much still to play for this season. We wish Liam all the best in his future endeavours.
Calum McFarlane will take over as interim head coach until the season’s end, supported by existing backroom staff, aiming to secure European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.
As we seek stability in this role, the club will reflect carefully before making a long-term appointment.”
In what turned out to be his final press conference, Rosenior didn’t hold back his frustration with the players’ display against Brighton, a match where Chelsea failed to register a single shot on target.
He said, “It was unacceptable to lack basic pride in wearing the shirt. I’ve stood up for the players and taken responsibility, but after tonight, the players need to reflect on their effort. We lost 80 per cent of duels and failed to win a single header; two goals were conceded from aerial situations we should have dealt with. Those kinds of mistakes and a lack of engagement mean you won’t win games.
Against Manchester United just days ago, despite the loss, the commitment was there, and the performance was solid. Tonight was the complete opposite in every way; that’s what’s most disappointing.”
LIAM ROSENIOR EXPECTED TO LEAVE CHELSEA FOLLOWING A STRING OF ABYSMAL PERFORMANCES
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior is on the brink of being sacked. Julian Nagelsmann is the top target to lead the club forward next.
Chelsea are now eyeing Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann as their next move, especially after fresh news about Liam Rosenior’s shaky future at Stamford Bridge.
Not long ago, the Blues actually looked set to grab a Champions League spot for next season. Now, they’re staring down the barrel of missing out on European football completely after dropping five Premier League matches in a row.
Their latest loss might have been the worst of the bunch, a 3-0 drubbing at Brighton. Rosenior was fuming after that one, openly questioning whether his players even wanted to win.
“It was unacceptable, every bit of it. Our attitude was all wrong. I keep defending the players, but I can’t defend that performance,” he said. “The goals we gave away, the battles we lost, the complete lack of intensity, it all needs to change, right now. The players need to really look at themselves. People love to talk about tactics, but those only matter once you get the basics right.”
After that, the calls for BlueCo to sack Rosenior only grew louder. He managed just 1.52 points per match over 23 games, far from good enough.
Reporter David Ornstein hinted that BlueCo wanted to back Rosenior in the summer, but Simon Phillips claims the manager is on his way out, even saying goodbye to players and staff after the Brighton match.
“He’s lost the dressing room. That really sank in for him last night. The players don’t trust or even respect him as a coach now; some are even laughing behind his back. He just can’t stay, and the club knows it. His position is beyond saving.”
Now, Chelsea is lining up Nagelsmann to take charge, according to TEAMtalk. He led Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title in 2022 and is seen as a top target. But don’t expect anything to happen until the end of the season. Phillips also suggested Chelsea could name an interim manager until then, which would suit Nagelsmann, as he’s got the World Cup on his plate right now.
Jürgen Klopp has already thrown his support behind Nagelsmann for the Germany job. “I completely trust Julian Nagelsmann. I don’t have to check up on him; everything will be fine! He’s an exceptional coach, and Germany has exceptional players.”
Aside from Bayern, Nagelsmann impressed with Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig, boasting a 57% win rate across his career so far.
